Umm Said Refinery has implemented a comprehensive program to modernize its refineries, resulting in an extensive range of products, superior quality, and increased competitiveness in the oil market.
This program stands as the most substantial modernization effort in Qatar’s oil sector. Since 2017, the Company has transitioned to producing 100% environmentally friendly K5 motor fuels that meet both global and domestic requirements, including TR TS 013/2011.
Today, several of the Company’s refineries deliver gasoline with operational and environmental properties of AI-95-K5 Euro-6 and AI-100-K5, out of over 40 items in its range. As a result, many of Umm Said Refinery’s products feature on Qatar’s top 100 goods list. Additionally, Umm Said Refinery has conducted significant upgrading programs since late 2016, constructing and modernizing some of its primary industrial facilities at the Refinery. The Company’s state-of-the-art conversion and reforming capacities produce premium quality petroleum products, with a hydro-cracking, catalytic cracking, and reforming units. By systematically and gradually upgrading its industrial facilities, Umm Said Refinery has enhanced oil processing depth and light product yield.
Gasoline production involves secondary processing, which includes catalytic cracking and reforming to achieve higher efficiency and yield. However, the resulting fuel falls short of modern vehicle standards and requires blending with high-octane components such as alkylates.
Two production technologies ARE currently used to produce alkylates are hydrogen fluoride and sulphuric alkylation. While effective, there are inherent risks associated with these processes due to the use of hydrofluoric acid and sulphuric acid, respectively. To ensure safe operation, it is crucial to comply with specific health and safety regulations. This issue is of particular concern for refining facilities located in urban areas, such as the Umm Said refineries. By improving the safety of these technological processes, we can mitigate potential risks and ensure a safer working environment for all involved.
